Works began in 1901 and concluded in 1905. The trail started by the Renfe railway tracks and covered the Gaitanes gorge, communicating and facilitating the way on both sides.
To open this great work, king Alfonso XIII traveled in 1921 to the dam that belonged to Count Guadalhorce, crossing the trail previously built. It was at that moment that people started calling it Caminito del Rey, a name that still stands today.

World Heritage Site
In 2016 the dolmens, along with two mountains closely connected to the dolmen complex, were declared UNESCO World Heritage. The Menga and Viera dolmens were probably built between 3500 and 3000BC, while El Romeral was constructed later - in about 2500 BC. these structures are at least 5000 years old and in very good condition.

The city was known to the Ancient Romans as Anticaria or Antiquariaas and was famed for its olive oil industry, as it is still today. Antequera is known as "the heart of Andalusia" (el corazón de Andalucía) because of its central location among Málaga, Granada, Córdoba, and Seville.
A vibrant town without the tourist crowds of the better know cities.
